I came to Mercy completely hopeless and numb. I thought my life was pointless and that the future was something I did not want to be a part of. Although I grew up in a loving and nurturing environment, I felt like I could never measure up. I strived for perfection in everything and, of course, I was left disappointed. I had been sexually abused, and that left me with many unanswered questions and much confusion. I began to deal with severe depression and escaped from the harsh realities of the world any way that I could. I got lost in literature, work and music, all to run from what had become so overwhelming. I began to self-harm as a means of coping with pain.

I came to Mercy Ministries because of drug and alcohol abuse and a lifestyle of promiscuity. I grew up without my biological father and never understood why he didn't love me enough to be there. Although my childhood was good by most standards, I missed not having a dad. When my mother remarried and had another child, I felt alone and began isolating myself and releasing my anger and aggression through sports. Soon after entering college, I began abusing drugs and alcohol. I dropped out shortly after and got a job, an apartment, and a car.

Carol Hulsey
Graduate of Mercy Ministries Recognized in Her local News
South Carolina teacher and Mercy Ministries graduate, Carol Hulsey, was recognized in her local paper on Saturday, not just for what she has taught, but for what she has learned.
The Herald-Journal in Spartanburg, SC featured a story that highlighted the 23 year old woman's six year struggle with bulimia, as well as her involvement with drugs and alcohol. From the outside, Hulsey seemed to be living her dream. Described as "lively and vivacious", Carol maintained a 3.9 grade point average and then, achieved her goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. While Carol loved her students, her eating behaviors were controlling her life. Due to the caring intervention of her employer, Carol finally resigned in order to enter Mercy Ministries.

I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Louisiana Tech University. I immediately began working, for two years, as a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Nutritionist at a local hospital and fitness center. During that time the Lord called me back to school again to finish a Master’s degree in nutrition. The Lord paved the way and provided all the necessary resources. In March of 2009, I graduated with a Master’s degree in Nutrition.
Soon after, I began feeling the desire to return to Mercy Ministries and work as the Nutrition and Fitness Manager. God opened the doors and it became a reality in February of 2009. It has been amazing to come back here to work and serve with the gifts and talents that the Lord has given me. I love pouring out all that the Lord has taught me. It is an incredible opportunity to help these girls find the hope and freedom in Christ that I have found.
